After years of studying and practicing the Earthbag Building technique (superadobe), Sepia Panamá embarked on the construction of an 87m² structure in 2019 for the new office project in Pedasí, Los Santos.
This project integrated enhancements from learned methodologies and adapted them to meet specific design guidelines, budget constraints, and architectural program requirements. Innovating in the construction method, we designed a structure with metal walls using galvanized steel profiles and chain-link mesh, which were then plastered with a unique clay mixture composed of sand, clay, shredded paper, cooked flour, chopped straw, long straw, manure, and borate.
Incorporating bioclimatic design principles, the office footprint was strategically oriented to optimize natural ventilation and reduce energy consumption, while thick earthen walls provided excellent thermal insulation, ensuring a comfortable indoor environment year-round. Functional design was also a key focus, with the layout facilitating efficient workflow and interaction among team members.
Additionally, the project emphasized sustainability through the repurposing and reuse of materials. Doors, building materials, and other elements from previous constructions were carefully restored and integrated into the new design, adding both character and reducing waste. This approach not only minimizes the environmental impact but also creates a unique aesthetic that blends modern techniques with traditional craftsmanship, reflecting our company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in architecture.
