2021

New Services

The opening of a new headquarters marks a significant step forward in Sepia’s expansion, bringing with it exciting new possibilities.

With this growth, we’ve introduced additional services aimed at deepening our involvement in every stage of the project. Our goal is to ensure the highest quality in each space, from the initial design concept to the final finishing touches. To achieve this, we have integrated personalized Interior Design services, allowing us to craft spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also tailored to the unique needs and visions of our clients.

2019 - 2021

Sepia Headquarters

After several years of studying and practicing the Earthbag Building technique (superadobe), Sepia conceptualized an 87m² structure in 2019 for the new Sepia Panamá office in Pedasí, Los Santos.

In 2020, construction began on the new Sepia Panamá offices, incorporating enhancements in the methodologies learned and adapting them to meet specific design, budget, and architectural program guidelines. This innovative approach involved designing a structure with metal walls, using galvanized steel profiles and chain-link mesh, which were then plastered with a unique clay mixture made from sand, clay, shredded paper, cooked flour, straw, and borate.

This evolutionary approach blends tradition with modernity, offering a cost-effective and alternative solution to conventional construction methods. We are thrilled to present a space that embodies our unique vision and commitment to innovation.

In 2021, the new SEPIA offices opened it’s doors.

2018 - 2019

Development

Sepia's work quickly gained recognition through word of mouth, driven by the satisfaction of clients who entrusted their dreams to the firm. This growing reputation attracted more individuals eager to establish their dream homes along the Azuero coast.

Driven by a passion for exploring and implementing various sustainable construction methodologies, Sepia embarked on its second in-house clay project in early 2018: "The Earth House Pedasí." This project successfully replicated the Earthbag construction techniques first applied in their initial endeavor, "La Casa de Barro." The Earth House Pedasí represents a significant milestone in Sepia's journey, further solidifying its position as a specialist in sustainable construction and innovative architecture in the region.

2015 - 2017

First Projects

Since its beginnings, Sepia has focused on blending traditional construction methods with contemporary materials to create buildings that have a reduced ecological impact on both their immediate environment and the living experience of their users. This approach also serves to preserve and celebrate local traditions.

In June 2015, Sepia embarked on its first project, “La Casa de Barro,” located in Portobelo, Colón. This internally conceived project utilized the Earthbag construction technique, pioneered by architect Nader Khalili, to initiate a hands-on research lab for sustainable construction methodologies.

Simultaneously, Sepia has excelled in the design and planning of spaces that offer functional and personalized solutions tailored to the preferences of clients in the Azuero region.

In the field of engineering, Sepia undertook the structural design for these residential projects, marking the beginning of a comprehensive commitment to quality and innovation in every aspect of their work

The Foundation

SEPIA is born from a desire to create projects that leave a lasting impact, promoting sustainable design and construction grounded in the conceptual and social foundations of Panamanian vernacular architecture.

Since establishing its offices in Pedasí in 2015, SEPIA has been refining its approach to passive construction, using clay as a primary material and pioneering the concept of the "contemporary quincha house." Alongside this, SEPIA continues to design and develop modern tropical architecture, seamlessly blending tradition with innovation.
